Christmas Recipe : Poppy Seed Bread

Every year growing up, my mom made poppy seed bread at Christmas. She would make some to wrap up and take to friends, and she would make some for us to have with Christmas breakfast. Oh my goodness, is it delicious! Our recipe for makes a moist, sweet bread with the most delicious citrus glaze. It’s like eating a bucket of love. This was always one of my favorite treats that I looked forward to every year, and I have carried the tradition over into our family. Poppy seed bread is a great neighbor or teacher gift! I plan on packaging up a few of these in some cute wrapping for friends and neighbors this year {to said friends: you can just act surprised. haha}.

Poppy Seed Bread Recipe

This is a really easy recipe {if I can do it, you can do it!}, but it does take some time.

Poppy Seed Bread Ingredients

For the bread you will need:

3 cups flour

1 1/2 tsp salt

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 1/2 tsp butter flavoring

1 1/2 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 tsp almond flavoring

1 cup cooking oil {I used half coconut and half olive oil this go around, but vegetable oil would work just fine}

3 beaten eggs

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 1/2 Tbs poppy seeds

1 1.2 cup milk

To start, preheat the oven to 350° beat the eggs and then slowly add sugar and almond, butter, and vanilla flavorings.

Mix in oil and poppy seeds.

Bake for 1 hour, or until it looks a nice golden brown and a toothpick will come out clean. You can use either 6 small loaf pans, 2 regular sized loaf pans, or a bundt pan. You’ll want to make sure whatever pans you use are greased before pouring in the batter.

You can make the glaze while your bread is baking.

For the glaze, you will need :

1 cup powdered sugar

3 Tbs orange juice

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp butter flavoring

1/2 tsp almond flavoring

All you need to do is mix all of the ingredients together. Once the bread has come out of the oven and while its still hot, poke the bread with a fork or toothpick and then pour the glaze over the top. This is the best part!
