Re-organized Linen Closet and Medications

One of the very first projects I did on this little ol’ blog was cleaning out and organizing our linen closet. It is both encouraging and embarrassing to look at some of those first posts and sad photos. {not that these photos are all that much better. I thought the laundry room was hard to capture. This is officially the most difficult space in our home to photograph}.

The linen closet was due again for a bit of sorting, purging and straightening up. The way I had organized the closet was pretty much still working well for us. I still keep items rolled and sorted into baskets, most of which were found at the dollar store. Smaller items, like pillow cases, are stored in reused linen bags.

I moved our medications to the linen closet the last time I attacked it. I store the medications in the linen closet for a few reasons. One is I used to keep them in the bathroom. It’s best not to keep meds near heat or a lot of steam as it can affect them. It’s an easy central place to keep everything in our house, plus when we start our adoption process, we’ll need all meds to be in a safe and lockable place. In the spirit of planning way ahead and keeping things simple, all of our medications and supplements were relocated to the closet.

Originally, I had sorted and organized all items into plastic shoe boxes from the dollar store. This worked fine, but dealing with the lids got to be a bit annoying. My two qualifications for organizing spaces is it has to have an element of pretty, and it has to be a simple system. Organizing is only good if it can stay that way.

To simplify my system a bit, I swapped out the lidded boxes for Rubbermaid drawers. I used these in the past to store paper and office supplies. They’re really quite handy for a lot of things. This is working so much better for us. You’re not going to put boxes and lids back in place when you feel like you’re about to puke. It’s a scientific fact. Anyone can open and shut a drawer.

I have a tub for extra toiletries and one for the pet supplies…

…and two baskets on the floor to dump dirty towels and rags. Since I got rid of even more stuff this round, I have room to keep the tub of my homemade laundry detergent.

I made new labels for the medication drawers as well as all of the baskets and tubs in the linen closet using PicMonkey. I laminated them all with my Scotch laminating machine {love!} so that they will last longer.

The best party really is having less stuff and more negative space. It has been so freeing to let go of junk I was holding onto for no reason. I only wish I would have started weighing the bags and boxes I gave away or threw out so I could see how much weight our house has lost at the end of the year.

Have you been doing any purging and reorganizing this year?
