Home Tour – Living Room

I’m pretty excited to share my living room with you today! We did a lot of work to this room and made a lot of changes last year that I haven’t blogged about yet. This space has made a complete 180 from the day we got our keys to this house. There are still a couple of small things I want to update or change, but overall…it is pretty much done. It’s my favorite room in the house, which is great since it’s the one we spend the most time in!

{I’m going to do my best to include sources, but feel free to ask if you have any questions!}

Like a Saturday Home Tour : Living Room BeforeAs I’ve mentioned before, our home was nearly 20 years old when we bought it from the original owner. She had never so much as painted a wall. All of the flooring was still original and had seen better days. We have since replaced the old carpet with engineered wood floors in the entry, living room and kitchen.

Like a Saturday Home Tour : Living Room BeforeProbably the same crazy person that doesn’t want this lovely fireplace set. ;)

And this is what our living room looks like now {looking from the front entrance}…

Last Spring, I re-painted the walls Mindful Grey by Sherwin Williams. {Side Note: I’m not sure why it looks like the paintings above the sofa are hanging so high. They’re not that high in real life.}

Like a Saturday Home Tour : Living Room Eclectic living room, painted in Mindful Grey with pops of blue and turquoiseWe also replaced our hand-me-down furniture with a couple of Ikea favorites – the Karlstad sectional with the darker grey slip cover and the Strandmon wingback chair. The rug is from RugsUSA, one of the best sources for rugs! They have several sales a year where you can score rugs for 50-80% off. This normally $1,000 rug was a steal at just $200. I love a good bargain! It has held up very well.

The pillow cover is from H&M {they have seriously adorable and affordable home goods}. You might also notice that Macy felt the need to be in nearly all of my shots. She’s a ham, that one. :)

Even though we live in the tropics of South Texas, I am so happy to have a fireplace! It was on my “must have” list when house shopping. I’ve enjoyed it so much more since we added the mantel. I have so much fun decorating and redecorating it with each season and holiday.

Like a Saturday Home Tour : Living Room Eclectic living room, painted in Mindful Grey with pops of blue and turquoiseThe mantel is looking pretty simple now with antique, blue Ball jars {leftover from our wedding}, a Goodwill mirror and my chippy oval frame layered on top. I’ve been relishing in the post-Christmas simplicity, but I’m about ready to decorate for Valentine’s Day.

You can see past posts for how I hung everything and for sources. The media stand is from Home Decorators, but I painted the base of the cabinet with chalk paint.

One of my favorite parts of the living room is our record cart. I repurposed a Target bar cart to hold our portable record player and vinyl collection. This has become a shared hobby of ours. We love searching through bins of old records for a treasure.

Since it’s not quite wide enough for a console table, I have a small telephone table just outside the entry in a random corner nook.

Like a Saturday Home Tour : Living Room Eclectic living room, painted in Mindful Grey with pops of blue and turquoiseIt’s a great dropping spot for keys, and the drawer is useful for storing odds and ends like candles and the dog’s leash. The adorable gourd lamps were a Target clearance find. $8 a piece!

Like a Saturday Home Tour : Living Room Eclectic living room, painted in Mindful Grey with pops of blue and turquoiseAs you can tell, I’m a bit globe obsessed. There are several more in the kitchen and guest room. The bird dish is from Home Goods.

Like a Saturday Home Tour : Living Room Eclectic living room, painted in Mindful Grey with pops of blue and turquoiseThe Time Life books stacked on the bottom shelf belonged to my Grandad. I love flipping through the pages when I visited my grandparents house. It is such a special thing to now have in my own home. Aren’t the fabric covers amazing?

The only things left to do in the room are painting the trim, replacing the sofa legs with something a bit more sleek and modern, and replacing the ceiling fan. I’d love to have a beautiful light fixture in here, but we just can’t go without our ceiling fans in Texas. I think installing a white fan would help it to disappear visually into the ceiling.

I’d also like to add a bit more color in here. Everything is very blue and grey, which is the perfect canvas for pops of color {as our yellow back door plays witness to}.

I’ll leave you with this side by side so you can see the difference a little bit of love and a few tweaks can make! We did everything on a budget and stretched it out over several years. Our living room is proof that you can have a home that you love without winning the lottery! :)

Have a great day!

Laundry Room Reveal

Happy day, everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend! Last week I showed you my plan for our little laundry room makeover, and I’m excited to bring you the reveal today. I’m so happy with the finished product.

When we moved into our house, I don’t think I really knew what my taste was and I didn’t really have a plan for how I wanted the house to look. In the last couple of years I’ve figured out more of what our design style is, and what style matches our personality and interests more. I’ve also grown in the area of pre-planning, which is leaving us with well thought out and more cohesive designs. It’s kind of an exciting place to be when your house starts shifting to serving your tastes and needs.

The laundry room has been made over from floor to ceiling. No surface went untouched. This is probably the only finished space in our house that really reflects our style. {The master bathroom would totally be one if I ever finished it. haha}. I’ll warn you that is a very photo heavy post. :) I’ll list all of my sources at the bottom.

 Our laundry room is at the end of the hall and leads to the garage. It’s all of about 40 square feet and has no natural light. Therefore it is pretty much the hardest space to photograph in the history of ever.

I had a ton of paint leftover from our bathroom cabinets, so I decided to not let it go to waste. The color is Mount Etna by Sherwin Williams, which is supposed to be more of a charcoal grey with blue undertones. It turned out to be more of a cobalt or navy color. I’m not sure if it is because of the finish of the paint or what, but I ended up really liking it. We have a lot of cobalt in our home, and I’ve always loved the color, so it works well.

 I ended up painting the ceiling in the same color. This felt like a total risk to me, but I’m happy that I took it. I had read in several places that painting a small room’s ceiling the same color as the walls helps it feel a but more spacious. I have to agree, as the room does feel taller and less cramped. The light fixture is a DIY using a shade from the ReStore and a pendant kit.

 I built a second shelf so I could reach day-to-day necessities a bit easier. The original shelf was way too high for my 5’3″ self. The shelves,  base boards and doors also got the paint treatment in Alabaster from Sherwin Williams {my go to paint}.

I made my own laundry detergent over a year ago and I’m still using my first batch. I keep my dryer sheets in the wooden box. I’m always a fan of pretty storage. :)

I have a catch-all bowl on the dryer for things like loose change. Our mop, brooms and ironing board are stored behind the door. This has saved us so much room!

The new floors are vinyl stick on tiles that look like carrara marble from Home Depot. It cost under $30 to redo the floors and I was able to tackle it in one evening after work. So far we love them and they seem very durable, especially for vinyl flooring.

I’m definitely loving the change! Since we come and go through the garage a lot, and therefore the laundry room, its so nice to have a pretty space to walk through. It almost makes me want to do laundry. Almost. ;)
