Flea Market Swap Makeover – #swapitlikeitshot

I’m joining over 30 other bloggers this week in the great Flea Market Swap, and today is Day 1! We sent each other a mystery box with fun flea market or thrift store finds, all under $15. Our challenge was to transform the contents of said box into something fabulous!

Flea Market Swap Makeover - #swapitlikeitshotBrandi from Don’t Disturb this Groove sent me a box full of goodies; fabric, wicker paper plate holders, some cute candle sticks and a scalloped wooden bowl.

Flea Market Swap Makeover - #swapitlikeitshotIf y’all have been reading this blog for very long, you probably know I love to pick up these wooden bowls at thrift stores. I’ve transformed them with paint to be anything from just “catch-all” bowls to planters. I was excited to get another one in my box to do some magic on!

Flea Market Swap Makeover - #swapitlikeitshotI started by spray painting the outside of the bowl in white. I just used some spray paint from my stash. It took about 3 coats of paint to get full coverage.

Flea Market Swap Makeover - #swapitlikeitshotSome of the paint seeped through to the edge, but that wasn’t a problem because I had plans for the inside of the bowl as well.

Flea Market Swap Makeover - #swapitlikeitshotI wanted to give the inside of the bowl a gold leafing treatment. I found a liquid version that has the consistency of paint at my local craft store. If you’re going to try this, I would definitely recommend using it outside. The fumes are pretty strong.

Flea Market Swap Makeover - #swapitlikeitshotI “painted” the entire inside as well as a little past the edge. I wanted a more organic shape {like the bowl} and so I didn’t tape it off.

Flea Market Swap Makeover - #swapitlikeitshotIt’s great for the coffee table, or to help corral my jewelry. I’m thinking it will be the new home for all of my bracelets. :)

You can hop over to Artsy Chicks Rule to see what I sent Nancy and what she did with it! And be sure to check out the rest of the girls’ projects this week. I can’t wait to see what everyone else did with their thrifted finds!

I Carry Your Heart in My Heart {Valentine’s Day Mantel}

I love Valentine’s Day. Well, really I love Valentine’s Day decor. It goes back to elementary school; decorating “mail boxes” and passing out Valentine cards and candy. I just can’t quite get enough of the pink and red hearts and paper doilies.

So, of course, I love putting up a few Valentine decorations in the house. I especially enjoy decking the mantel for the day of love! This year’s mantel features a few of my favorite things : chalk art, vintage and handmade!

Happy, handmade Valentine's Day mantelThe focal point of the mantelscape is the large printed chalk art, based on the famous E.E. Cummings poem. You can purchase the downloadable file from Caravan. I had an engineer print done at Staples for around $4.

Happy, handmade Valentine's Day mantelMost of the rest of the mantel is recycled from last year’s. The adorable felt heart garland is by Aidie’s Hideaway. You can read about how to make the faux antique brass letters here.

Happy, handmade Valentine's Day mantel I bought a grocery store bouquet of white spider mums and used my blue jars as vases.The antique mason jars are leftover from our wedding and have gotten so much use since then!

Happy, handmade Valentine's Day mantelThe flowers got an extra dose of fun with Happy Flags from Natalie Creates.

Happy, handmade Valentine's Day mantelAren’t they cute?? :)

Happy, handmade Valentine's Day mantelDo you put up any Valentine decorations, or are you still enjoying the post-Christmas breathing room?

“I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart)I am never without it (anywhere
I go you go,my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing,my darling)
I fear no fate (for you are my fate,my sweet)I want no world (for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

I carry your heart (I carry it in my heart)”

CRAFT FAIL {Book Review}

I was given an advance copy of the book to review. All words, thoughts, and opinions are my own.

Do you remember last year when arm knitting was all the rage? All of the cool kids were making these beautiful, cozy scarves for the winter….and “it was so easy” ! Well, I tried my hand at this craft called arm knitting. I knew I was going to have a new beautiful scarf to add to my collection, and that’s what everyone was going to get for Christmas, too! Well…I tried…and I failed. I found myself in a tangled up ball of fuzzy blue yarn.

Craft Fail by Heather Mann...in stores now!

I have had my fair share of Craft Fails, but I don’t usually post them here. I figured my readers would rather see my projects that were a success and turned out beautifully. I’m rethinking that stance after flipping through Heather Mann’s Craft Fail : When Homemade Goes Horribly Wrong*. Because y’all…these Craft Fails are hilarious! I love a good laugh {and love to make people laugh….even if at my own expense}, and this book is definitely full of laughter inducing moments!

Craft Fail by Heather Mann...in stores now!

You will find horribly entertaining photos, hilarious anecdotes, and even some tips on how to avoid failing at certain craft projects. If nothing else, it will make you feel better about your own “Nailed it” moments. ;)
