seasonal decor

Blue and Green Summer Mantel

Oh, y’all. It is officially summer in Texas. Not like officially officially. It’s not on the calendar or anything but, goodness! It is HOT! I have lived in Texas my entire life and I’m still a wimp. Oh well. I can cope by decorating for summer and enjoy said decor from the comforts of my own air conditioned home. Can we all just take a moment to thank the Lord for the inventor of A/C?

….

Amen.

Now, on to that decor I was talking about! I’m still so glad we added a “mantel” to our fireplace via Pottery Barn shelf. It has been so much fun to change it up a bit with each season. For summer, I’m keeping things cool with blues and greens.

I put the gold oval mirror back up as an anchoring piece. We have vaulted ceilings in our living room, so I like to have something hanging higher to draw the eye up and to keep the other mantel decor from feeling to squatty in comparison to the tall ceilings.

I built the rest of the mantelscape around this gorgeous painting. Nothing says summer more than the water! I scored this painting from an online “flea market” on another blog. I love finding unique pieces like this. When you hit up your local thrift store or flea market, take some time to dig through old ugly prints and posters. You may find a beautiful gem like this hiding in there!

The vintage brownie camera was a thrift store find from our vacation in Colorado a few years ago. I think it cost me 2 or 3 bucks, which is a steal! It reminded me of taking photos during summer vacation, so it was a must for this mantel.

The rest of the mantel decor consists of pretty glass and live plants. These elements keep the vignette feeling light and fresh. The green sherbet dish is leftover from my knock off dessert stand project, and the blue mason jar is from my stash leftover from our wedding. I have a couple of ivy plants around the house. Every now and then, when they start getting long, I’ll clip a sprig and stick it in water. It will start sprouting roots and you have a new {free!} plant! I am absolutely no green thumb, so if I can do it…you can do it!

Summer Porch Deja Vu

I have a confession. Sometimes I like to decorate the same way I have before.

I know. DIY and home bloggers are supposed to be reinventing the wheel and coming up with new ideas without repeating themselves, right? I am one of those people who likes to rearrange things in the house and change up decor seasonally. But you know, sometimes I really like something and I want to do it again. Shocking, I know. ;)

I really liked my summer porch from last year. I love the wreath I made for it more than any other wreath I’ve made before. So why would I let it collect dust in the garage all season if it makes me smile? Pishaw. I don’t roll that way.

So! My front porch is looks an awful lot like it did a year ago. And that’s ok with me. :)

There are some differences since I’ve added a couple of features to the porch area this year — like my giant chalkboard and stacked book plant stand

This season’s chalkboard art comes{again} to your courtesy of Ralph Waldo Emerson. I love this quote. :)

L-O-V-E {Valentine’s Day Mantel}

Holy wow. Did y’all see the Super Bowl last night? I’m still in shock! Anywho…who’s ready for a little Valentine fun? :)

I love decorating for Valentine’s day! It’s not that I ever had a great heart day track record before meeting my husband. My one high school boyfriend brought me a Costco tub of bubble gum. So, there was that. There’s just something about cute little pink and red hearts that brings a smile to my face. :)

L-O-V-E : Valentine's Day MantelI had fun decking out our mantel in all things lovey dovey!

L-O-V-E : Valentine's Day MantelI turned this antique frame into a photo display by stapling a bit of chicken wire to the back. A few favorite Instagrams of my sweetie and I are clipped to the wire with mini clothes pins. I Valentine-sed the clips up with a bit of festive washi tape {from Michael’s}. I had the photos printed through Printstagram. This has by far been my favorite source for Instagram prints. They’re a great quality and they have a variety of printing options.
